About Asavas & Arishtas
One of the important dosage form in Ayurveda is the class of liquid preparation called Asava and Arishta. These preparations are fermented preparations, Asavas and Arishtas are therefore weak alcoholic preparations. They are prepared with raw sugar and various medicinal substances such as fruits, root, leaves, bark etc. of plants which are cut into pieces and steeped in water and laid aside in wooden vate for fermentation for varying time depending on the rate at which the fermentation proceeds. When the preparation is made by infusing the drugs in cold water and allowing to undergo fermentation with the help of raw sugar the resulting preparation is called Asava. In the case of Arishta, generally the drug is used after boiling and making a decoction. However this is not true in all cases. To manufacture Asavas and Arishta is an art and a science which has been perfected over the decades by many reputed companies so as to preserve the traditional method coupled with modern scientific technology.
