Hair springs from the true skin, each hair having a root and a stem or shaft. The stem is generally rounded and varies greatly in thickness, while in case of curly hair it is oval or flattened in section. The varying tint of the hair is due to pigment scattered in variying amounts throughout the hair. The rate of growth of hair is about 15 centimeters or 6 inches in a year, though in most people when the hair reaches a certain length it ceases to grow and the root is gradually pushed upwards till it falls out. It is then replaced by a new hair, which develops from a fresh papilla.
Baldness may be due to certain serious diseases like acute fever, myxodema, syphilis, influenza, anemia, inadequate nutrition, great anxiety or nervous shock. Premature baldness is generally considered to be hereeditary and not much can be done except delaying the fall for some years through proper medication. The subject of hair care and problems such as baldness, graying has been mentioned in our ancient texts. Normally, many people are found with no hair on a circumscribed area of the skull or beard. This is knows as baldness. In the worst case hair of the beard, eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits is lost. In ayurveda, this condition is described as Kalitya. Generally mental worry, anxiety and anger are the cause for it. Graying of hair is generally considered as a sign of old age but at times graying starts at young age. In ayurveda this is called Palitya. According to ayurveda, excessive passion, anger and psychic strain results in graying of hair. Persons with pathica type of constitution are prone to be afected by this ailment.
